Overview

Don Det is an island in the middle of the Mekong River in Si Phan Don in Laos. This place used to be really off the beaten track but since the changes to the tubing scene in Vang Vieng which the majority of bars closed down, the young party crowd has moved here.

Don Det is a great destination for backpackers which offers many cheap guesthouses and bars catering to the lower budget tourists. To get around the island, guests can take a walk or do cycling. There are not many temples and culturally important sites but the island and tranquil surroundings are the real gems.

On the way exploring, you will see the temple on Don Kon with a very old stupa, waterfalls, the Dolphin View Point and little islands dressed with palms. Due to the stunning landscapes, there are numerous interesting activities that you can experience there. Swimming in the Mekong River would be a fascinating thing that you should not miss. You can also rent a tube and float in the river for a few hours while trying some beers and snack. If you want to see the rare Irrawaddy dolphins on Laos/Cambodian border, take a boat tour or full day kayak tour. Try some local cuisine at restaurants and cafes.
