Exploring the “Underground palace” in Paradise cave, Phong Nha - Ke Bang

Considered as the "royal palace in the earth", Paradise cave is one of the most magnificent and magical wonders in the world. The cave hides itself deep inside the World Natural Heritage Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park, in the ancient karst terrain formed of about 350 to 400 million years.

Mysterious beauty of Paradise cave

Paradise cave is 4 kilometers from the west of Ho Chi Minh highway, located in Son Trach commune, Bo Trach district, Quang Binh province. It is also about 70 kilometers from the northwest of Dong Hoi city and 25 kilometers from Phong Nha cave. Thanks to its location, the road to Paradise cave is very convenient.

In 2005, a notice of discovering a local cave by a local person in the heart of the World Natural Heritage Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park immediately attracted the awareness of both domestic and international scientists, explorers, and communities. Shortly afterward, the British Cave Research Association, chaired by Dr. Howard Limbert, immediately organized the expedition to explore the cave and published unexpected results.

According to the reconnaissance team, this is the longest dry cave in Asia, especially the stalagmite and stalactite system here has the shimmering and fanciful beauty that is beyond the imagination of humanity.

Paradise cave is 31.4 kilometers long and 30-100 meters wide. The widest space in the cave is up to 150 meters. The height of the cave floor is about 60-80 meters. It was considered by the British Cave Research Association as one of the most spectacular caves that they had discovered all around the world. Paradise cave’s structure is extremely wonderful, magnificent, and fanciful that every explorer will associate the cave with an underground royal palace.

Not just stopping at the feeling of surprise, visitors will be extremely shocked before the unique charm of this cave. The door of the cave is very small, enough for just one person to go through, lying under a giant rock of over-100-meter height that looks spectacular. There is a slope leading to the cave that is 15 meters long. The slope has been formed very sophisticatedly with numerous circle, big stalactites and stalagmites.

Along two sides of the slope, there are various relics of collapse and untidy stalactites as if they have undergone a tectonic phase. The fanciful and magnificent beauty of the cave is revealed when the light illuminates the various miraculous stalactites. The entrance is small but the space inside the cave has a width of more than 200 meters and the ceiling is very high.

Especially, the cave has many unique images relating to the cultural symbols of different regions. Deep in the cave, it has many stones lying into steps that are very convenient and long as the terraced rice fields. In the middle of the cave, there are various blank spaces as a symbol of the wet rice civilization and many stalactite columns shaped like the Champa towers, appearing very beautiful.

The most unique masterpiece in Paradise cave is probably Quang Han Palace, where the stalactites are decumbent like the curtain of the fairy, or the Quan Tien Palace converging with the Amitabha Buddha statue complex, etc. The most impressive is the Lien Hoa tower that under different views, the tower has different special shapes. Actually, it is because the stalactites are formed from the droplets splashing disorderly, creating the mysterious beauty for the cave.

Compared to Phong Nha cave, the stalactites in Paradise cave have more shapes. Occasionally, tourists can encounter stalactite slopes as newly being created, still wet and steamed, sounding as breaking when stepping on them. When the lights shining on, they flash like silver tinsel and sparkle like a starry night. Most of the ground floors in the cave are pliable, wide, and fairly flat with a temperature of only 20-21 degrees Celsius.
