Travel Kratie Detail

Kratie is a province in the northeast of Cambodia. It is adjacent to Stung Treng in the north, Mondulkiri in the east, Kampong Thom and Kampong Cham in the west, and Tbong Khmum and Vietnam in the south. The provincial capital is the town of Kratie in Kratie district.

The Mekong River runs through the province with the length of 140 km. The river is home to many species such as Irrawaddy dolphins, fish, and birds. There are hundreds of islands in the river, most of them are flooded during the rainy season while appearing on the surface in the dry season. In 2007, the Cambodian government signed to build a dam on the river near Kratie town. The province owns many forests and mountains such as the Phnom Pram Poan mountain range, Phnom Prech, and rubber plantations. 

The province is covered by the primitive forests. During the bombing time in the Vietnam war, some of which are filled with water, are still visible in the countryside. The province has a monsoon climate with a cool season from November to March, hot season from March to May and a rainy season from May to October. In the rainy season, the water level can rise as high as 4 meters, this is also the flood season in the area.

70% population of the province live along the Mekong river. Whereas there is a Vietnamese community living in the province, this is home to seven indigenous groups of Bunong, Kouy, Mil, Khonh, Kraol, Steang, and Thamon. 70% population of the province live in a rural area, it is one of 4 provinces of Cambodia with a substantial indigenous population.
