Located about 30 km from Chau Doc city, An Giang,  Tra Su Sanctuary is considered the most typical and unique natural habitat conservation area of the wetland ecosystem in the Mekong Delta. The biodiversity of Tra Su Sanctuary

Animals

Covering an area of about 850 hectares, Tra Su Melaleuca forest has a variety of animals including:

  • Seventy species of birds belonging to 13 orders and 31 families, primarily of which there are two precious bird species listed the Vietnam Red Book.
  • Eleven mammal species are belonging to 4 orders and six families, especially rare and precious short-eared bat species listed in Vietnam Red Book.
  • About 25 species of reptiles and frogs including two sets and ten families, especially this is the habitat of cobra and scorpion.
  • About ten species of fish appearing all year round and 13 species only appear in the flood season.

Plants

Besides, Tra Su Melaleuca forest also has a diversity of plant species. In the forest, about 140 plant species are belonging to 52 families and 102 genera. Most of them are large Melaleuca trees over ten years old and 5 to 8 m high.

Tra Su Sanctuary is a hydrated forest playing an essential role in the conservation of plants and animals. With the wild beauty, this place has become a popular tourist destination for visitors, especially in the flood season. 

Cave Pagoda

It is the first destination you should visit when coming to Tra Su. The pagoda is one of the ancient temples of the Kho-Mer. It covers an area of about 10ha, in which the natural forest area accounts for nearly half.\

Tourists follow Highway 91 toward Nha Bang Town to the intersection then turn left. You just need to cross the slopes of Mount Ket to see the jaggery fields of the Cham ethnic people.

How to explore Tra Su Sanctuary

Tourists will seat on a dinghy to visit around of Tra Su cajuput forest. Each boat can carry about 3-5 tourists and one tourist staff.

The most beautiful time of Tra Su forest is in the flood seasons. Tourists feel like surfing on the "green roads" covered by water hyacinth. Coming to Tra Su at this time, you can watch many birds.
