Son Doong cave was discovered by a farmer named Ho Khanh in 1991. According to the words of Ho Khanh, he worked as an agarwood seeker in the forest at that time. Once he was finding the agarwood in the deep forest, he encountered a large rain. Being afraid of the sudden flood, Ho Khanh decided to find a place to hide, and then incidentally, he ran into a natural hut but didn't know it is Son Doong cave.

Son Doong was lost for 15 years

At that time finding out Son Doong cave, Ho Khanh didn't know the value of the cave. After that time, he skipped finding the agarwood and came back to be a farmer working on the farm.

For the next 15 years, this cave was still left in the forest until 2006, when an expedition of the Royal Society of British came to find the new cave in Phong Nha - Ke Bang, Khanh brought out his story to tell them. It is also where the journey to find the cave in his memory was started.

According to the geologists, Son Doong cave was formed from 2 to 5 million years ago, when river water flowed across and stuck in the limestone area along a fault line. The water eroded the limestone and created a huge cave as it today.
