Shwezigon Pagoda is located in Nyaung-U, a town 4km from Bagan. Construction began in 1059 and it was completed in 1102. It's been damaged by several earthquakes, including the 1975 earthquake, but it has been repaired. Like Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon, the pagoda is gilded with gold leaf ("shwe" means "gold"), and while it's not as well-known as Shwedagon, it's also not as crowded, and the ground is much cleaner. Shwezigon is known for its four shrines, each containing a 13 foot tall bronze Buddha, and for the 37 figures of nats (spirits).

Bagaya Monastery Worth a visit to discover this teak monastery, circa 1870. The craftsmanship and details in the wood carvings are spectacular, and a reminder of the challenges faced by those building the monastery.

We saw a lot of pagodas etc in our trip to Myanmar. This was one of the more peaceful visits, being rather less crowded than some of the others elsewhere. The cave setting added to the more tranquil feel, with devotional images crammed into every noon and cranny.
